Dental implants are considered the pinnacle of tooth replacement because they look and function just like real teeth. While the materials used in dental implants are biocompatible and resistant to disease and decay, they still require proper hygiene and maintenance in order to work properly in the long run. Here are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind while caring for your dental implants.
Follow Your Oral Surgeon’s Instructions
Dental implants are placed through surgery, and your oral surgeon will provide you with some instructions to help your recovery go quickly and smoothly. Immediately after the procedure, your gums may be too tender for conventional oral hygiene practices. Your dentist may recommend a specific oral hygiene regimen for while your implant is healing, such as brushing your other teeth while avoiding the sensitive areas.
Ask Someone You Trust for Help
Dentists recommend that you have a friend or family member available to help while you recover from dental implant surgery. It’s important to get plenty of rest for the first twenty-four hours after the procedure, so it’s a good idea to have someone who can prepare soft foods like soft veggies and soups for you and help you take your medication as prescribed. You should spend plenty of time during this first day lying on your back with your head supported by pillows. This will help control swelling and bleeding in your mouth and face.
Don’t Smoke
Tobacco use is notorious for causing dental implants to fail. In response to the presence of chewing tobacco or tobacco smoke, your gums will harden to protect themselves from the chemicals therein. The nicotine will cause your blood vessels to constrict, which makes it harder for them to heal or fight infections. It is a great idea to cease smoking altogether after receiving dental implants.
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for tooth loss, and with proper care, they can last for decades or even a lifetime. By following your dentist’s instructions, you can minimize the difficulty of recovering from the surgery so you can comfortably enjoy your restored smile sooner.
