Dental implants are the best option for tooth replacement available because they are permanent, incredibly lifelike, and capable of restoring most of a patient’s chewing ability. Since no two smiles are the same, dental implants can best serve different patients in different ways. Here’s a quick overview of the different ways by which these marvels of modern dentistry can complete a patient’s smile.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
A dental implant consists of a titanium post, an abutment, and an artificial tooth. The post is surgically placed in the jawbone and the abutment is attached to it above the gumline. The artificial tooth is secured to the abutment, creating a lifelike and functional replacement. The post is designed to fuse with the surrounding bone structure through the natural process of osseointegration, creating a sturdy hold that allows it to chew naturally and prevent or reverse bone loss in the jaw.
How Many Dental Implants Do I Need?
Dental implants can treat tooth loss in three ways, and the proper one to use depends on the patient’s situation.
Single implant
If you are missing a single tooth or several spread throughout your smile, single implants are the best way to address the problem. Individual implants will be placed in the empty spaces, filling in the gaps in your smile and allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of a full set of teeth.
Implant-supported bridge
Dental bridges have been used for centuries to treat a few missing teeth in a row. However, traditional dental bridges are secured using dental crowns placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, which requires them to be altered. An implant-supported bridge is secured in place with implants on either side of the gap, creating a superior restoration that doesn’t require the modification of any existing teeth.
Implant dentures
Traditional dentures are a great way to restore a smile after extensive tooth loss, but they are not permanent solutions. They need to be regularly adjusted to maintain a secure fit in the mouth, and a set can only last about ten years with excellent care. Implant dentures, on the other hand, are secured using four implants placed in the jaw, meaning it takes eight implants to replace both arches of teeth. This creates a permanent solution that can chew foods that traditional dentures have difficulty with like steak and popcorn.
Dental implants can be used to treat many different forms of tooth loss. Consulting with your dentist can determine if dental implant treatments are right for you.
